Do not display lens EXIF data in FF Equivalent#44

M

There’s currently some discrepancy in the EXIF data in that, for example, my Fujifilm X100V (which has a fixed lens) displays the lens as 23mm (so the APSC format) but an XF35mm on an X-Pro3 is displayed as 53mm (so the FF format). I suggest using the actual numbers on the lenses because in relation to the camera which is also mentioned, you’re already able to work out what the field of view is.

The current setup confuses me as there is no 53mm lens on the X-system and therefore the information no longer serves its purpose. I can only assume the same will be true for the M43 system or medium format systems.

As a general thought, I don’t think you need to do the thinking for people in a community that’s mostly aware of these technical details already. It’s better to present the information as pure as possible without introducing another cognitive step. Most people are already accustomed to converting to FF equivalence whenever necessary and reversing this for everybody who doesn’t have FF sensor makes this inconsistent.

I hope my comment makes sense and I’m open for discussion on the topic. Thank you for your efforts and thank you for reading.

Kind regards

I’ve been thinking about this and I suspect there’s slightly more nuance. For FF and crop sensors I really want to see the actual focal length of the lens but for things like iPhone photos it makes way more sense to me to see the 35mm equivalent compared to seeing something like 3.3mm… same goes for small-format compact cameras like the XQ2, 8mm is meaningless to me at that point.

Solid points Alex. I’ve thought about it for a second and I think it makes sense to simple have multiple lines in the EXIF. As it stands I’m looking at 32mm shots from other people and have to do the math in my head to figure out which lens was used. The actual lens name is present in the EXIF data but it doesn’t display currently, which I think is an oversight.

So I suggest we go:

  • camera used
  • full name of lens used (with FF equivalence in brackets behind it?)
  • the details of the current shot (aperture, shutter speed and ISO)
  • full frame equivalence, if not placed in brackets on the first line.

We’ve udpated this to show both the actual lens length and the FF equivalent (in parantheses). Thanks so much for this feedback!
